Answer four questions and get a hospital bag checklist built for your delivery — what to pack, what to skip because the hospital supplies it, and a printable list to tick off.
Most hospital bag lists are the same generic list, and they're all too long. The useful version is shorter and knows something about your situation — so this one filters on four things and, crucially, tells you what to leave at home.
Every item is tagged with its source. The list is built from Cleveland Clinic's "What To Pack in Your Hospital Bag" and UT Southwestern Medical Center's delivery checklist, both retrieved 2026-08-10, with a couple of items from the NHS packing guidance. A small number of items are marked practical — widely-repeated advice that none of those sources states outright. We label those rather than dress them up as hospital guidance.
Confidence: high for the items, medium for the "hospital provides" calls. What a hospital supplies genuinely varies — Cleveland Clinic itself hedges with "at some hospitals". Call your hospital's labor and delivery unit before you leave something out. None of this is medical advice.

Photo ID, insurance card, phone and a long charger, glasses if you wear them, lip balm, basic toiletries, shower shoes with treads, a loose going-home outfit, and for the baby a car seat, two going-home outfits in two sizes and a receiving blanket. That is genuinely most of it. Everything else on a typical list is comfort, not necessity.
At most US hospitals: diapers, wipes, bottles, nipples, pacifiers, mesh underwear, maternity pads, a peri bottle and the gown. Cleveland Clinic lists all of those as supplied, and adds that some hospitals also provide toiletries, socks and slippers. It varies, so call your labor and delivery unit — but this is the biggest source of over-packing.
The NHS suggests having it ready about three weeks before your due date. Leave some empty space: you come home with more than you arrive with, including the peri bottle, spare mesh underwear and pads, which are all worth taking.
A scheduled C-section usually means a longer stay, so pack extra changes of clothes, and high-waisted underwear and bottoms that sit above the incision rather than on it. Neither hospital source we used publishes a C-section packing list, so we flag those items as practical advice rather than clinical guidance — ask your care team what they recommend.
Cleveland Clinic says leave jewelry and valuables at home, don't bring clothing you actually like (expect stains), and no candles — open flames aren't permitted. Don't pack your own medications either; the hospital pharmacy dispenses them, so coordinate with your provider instead.
Two, in two different sizes. Bring both Newborn and 0–3M because you don't know how big your baby will be, and bring a spare because the first outfit usually gets dirty before you leave. The NHS frames it as one for photos and one for the trip home.
